Snows Commercials


Snows Commercials of Compton Greenfield Bristol have a new addition to a very clean fleet of specialist trucks and trailers, collecting salvage vehicles for their recycling operations. Currently they have three Low Loaders and two Heavy Underlifts. However, Snows required another Underlift that would more versatile. MD Percy Snow explains ‘Some vehicles we collect are in inaccessible locations and have to be winched to a position where they can be recovered by the Underlift, and what we have here is just that. Plus the fact we have a replacement vehicle to enable us to go into London, as it’s Euro Four’. So what has Percy got?  He has a very clean Scania R 420 6x2 Tractor, stretched to a wheelbase of 5300mm, measured to the new front bogie drive axle. This drive axle was installed to replace the original steer and the axle spread, altered to 1365mm, to take advantage of the higher axle loadings. The last axle no: 3 then had the differential internals removed and made liftable for traction, as it is now a tag axle, although normally it is always in road contact, this way the axle loadings were maintained. The vehicle is very manoeuvrable in confined yards due to this arrangement. Add to that a  brand new TRS HU17- 08/42, bought as a kit from Transportation and Recovery Systems Ltd (TRS) Bristol, with a chassis subframe, Lifting Boom with a 4.2mtr reach, an Overhead Winching Boom, dual Winch Mounting Platforms, prepared for two Superwinch  H30 hydraulic winches, four rear Winch Back ‘D’ shackles, two each on the rear Stiff Legs, and a good selection of Lifting Forks and Pedestals.The Kit was installed by Snows and Bodywork by Spectra UK, a Specialist in Engineering and Coachbuilding.

However our products, especially Slidebacks, are easy to identify so we get quite a lot of feedback from potential buyers. When Northern Ireland operator David Brown of Lakeland Recovery  visited the TRS factory in Bristol to inspect his TRS HU17-08\42 Heavy Underlift  kit prior to despatch, he saw a used mid range SV Underlift, (previously bought by TRS as a project). Liked what he saw and decided to buy it from TRS, taking advantage of the space available on the trailer. This was now a Brown project, and the ever resourceful and highly skilled David Brown set about building a  comprehensive Mid Range Wrecker, adding stiff legs, top winching boom with two DP20 hydraulic winches and attractive bodywork.

One of the last Renault 160-65 single cab, Mascotts was delivered to the TRS facility in Fishponds, Bristol for the installation of a TRS275 Slideback system, which included a Second Car Carrier with a 1,000 kg capacity. The Mascott is due to be discontinued, but has served the Recovery Industry very well in recent years here and on the Continent. In Germany a TRS customer has taken advantage of a price reduction on the chassis, and sent it to TRS.  Slideback Kits showing as a display at a Trade Show, and a few recipient chassis that have been converted by their owners. The MAN has already been converted, finished and painted, and returned to TRS, to collect more kits for their requirements.
TRS has gained a reputation for supplying and installing quality Slideback systems to suit most chassis over 5 tonnes GVW. The TRS350 is the most popular, manufactured to suit 7.5 tonne to 10 tonne GVW chassis cabs. However all of the TRS range of Slidebacks have been designed for ease of installation which makes it ideal to sell in kit form. The TRS275, designed to fit 5/6.5 tonne Iveco Daily and Renault Mascott, 6/7.5 tonne Isuzu and Mitsubishi range of chassis. They are lighter and narrower than their sister TRS350/400 and give an excellent payload, even on a 6 tonne chassis. The TRS500/600 which fits nicely onto 11 tonne to 15 tonne GVW chassis and occasionally installed on an 18 tonner with a crane. On each of the model range, the platform is finished, decked to a length with over long side raves, the galvanised chassis subframe (supplied over length) has the tilting inner body subframe, also galvanised, attached by the hinge. Where there is a requirement for a Second Car Lift (which would include special securing straps and ratchets) or towing beam it would be fitted, hinged to the rear. The valve block with stainless steel face plate and surround is in place to the nearside, although it can be easily moved to the opposite side for left hand drive configuration. All appropriate rams and hoses are in place ready to be piped up to your PTO/Pump. Also included as part of the package, an oil tank, Flyer, toolbox, hose chain and tray, mud flaps, and protective aluminium capping for the side raves. Each kit comes with fitting instructions, showing how it is assembled and fitted to the chassis of your choice. The kit included, as well as a 4.2 metre reach, an Overhead Winching Boom, dual Winch Mounting Plates, four rear Winch Back ‘D’ shackles, a selection of lifting forks and sockets. Bodywork is not on the agenda in the short term, and the truck has been action, collecting salvage.

Caught on camera an Iveco Stralis with a TRS ‘Thunderlift’ kit attached to the chassis, on its way to the customer’s body builder of choice, Recovery Bodywork Systems of Kidderminster Worcestershire and being delivered by TRS. Alpha Recovery of Cramlington, Northumberland had purchased the TRS HU17-08\42 Heavy Underlift system some months before and were waiting for the chassis to arrive. The Stralis was delivered directly from Iveco toTRS (Transportation and Recovery Systems Ltd) of Fishponds Bristol where the kit was securely attached to the chassis, for transport purposes. The kit included, as well as a 4.2 metre reach, an Overhead Winching Boom, dual Winch Mounting Plates, four rear Winch Back ‘D’ shackles, a selection of lifting forks and sockets, a heavy duty Tow Bracket and Wheel Stands. Alpha’s Michael Burke adds ‘We initially planned for a lift and tow system but this was such good value we decided to have a lot of extra equipment, and yet still stayed within our budget. We then have the bodywork so it’s not over yet. One thing I do know is that having installed quite a few TRS Underlift systems, Martin O’Toole [RBS] will do an excellent job with the installation and bodywork, so the whole project is in safe hands’.

The TRS HU17-08\42 Heavy Underlift system bought as a kit by a Devon operator was Delivered from TRS (Transportation and Recovery Systems Ltd) of Fishponds Bristol to Plymouth in Devon where was installed on a very clean Scania 143M-420. The kit included, as well as a 4.2 metre reach, an Overhead Winching Boom, dual Winch Mounting Plates, four rear Winch Back ‘D’ shackles, a selection of lifting forks and sockets, a heavy duty Tow Bracket, Wheel Stands and an X type wheel lifting frame. The attractive bodywork with wardrobe lockers was finished, at their own workshop, in aluminium.

Transportation and Recovery Systems Ltd of Fishponds Bristol, has gained a reputation for supplying and installing quality Slideback systems to suit most chassis over 5 tonnes GVW. Their TRS350 is the most popular, manufactured to suit 7.5 tonne to 10 tonne GVW chassis cabs. However all of the TRS range of Slidebacks have been designed for ease of installation which makes it ideal to sell in kit form. Other products available in kit form include:- The business end of the Spectacle Lifts, both Swan Neck and Low Lift systems, also available with body pods or panels if required. Heavy Underlifts set on a chassis subframe with all hydraulic pipework, control valves, filters and rams in place ready to install onto a chassis and pipe up to a PTO/Pump. Options include overhead Winching Boom with 180 degree swivelling Fairleads, Winch Mounting Plates and Winch Back Shackles. Most surprising is the Low Height Plant Carrier with a special chassis subframe, cross members and the Heavy Duty ‘Tip Toe’ ramps to the rear. Whatever you do in business there has always been a requirement to operate efficiently, to save costs and time. The current trend of moving cars around the Country with lightweight transporters is    one way to go, but there are downsides. To get the best out of a vehicle and driver, you don’t want to run with a tachograph or operators licence, do you? It means, of course a transporter with a maximum Gross Vehicle Weight of 3,500kg. No tacho, but you have a legal obligation to keep a record of your working hours, and if you tow a trailer a tacho is required. The next issue is payload, so to keep weights to a minimum we at TRS use only aluminium cross members, sideraves, decking and ramps to obtain the highest possible payload. We then weigh the vehicle to see if we can make more savings, before it is despatched to the customer. We do not make claims we can’t backup.
